Bacterial Cellulose Production by Komagateibacter xylinus with the Use of Enzyme-Degraded Oligo- and Polysaccharides as the Substrates

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a unique biopolymer synthesised by many bacteria as critical element of their biofilm matrix. The most known and efficient producers BC are from the genus Komagataeibacter. cellulose, with its properties, high crystallinity, mechanical strength, unprecedented ability to hold water, an object interest in industries. Despite enormous efforts that have been made develop effective process, economic aspect production still limiting factor for broadening applications, new “breaking point” solutions highly anticipated. In this study, possibility using sucrose, lactose, starch alternative carbon sources converted simple sugars directly culture medium microbial glycohydrolases, β-D-fructofuranosidase, β-galactosidase, glucoamylase process synthesis was analysed. results showed potential enzyme-assisted fermentation that, used raw carbons sources, efficient, yield higher (i.e., lactose 40% more) or comparable cultures maintained on standard Hestrin-Schramm media glucose sole source. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope analyses did not reveal any negative influence cultivation material such swelling ratio, moisture content. Applying specific enzymes converting inaccessible, raw-form Komagateibacter xylinus opens way use various oligo- polysaccharides acquired kinds biomass process.
